We live in tumultuous times. It seems that not a week goes by without news reports of horrific attacks against Christians in various parts of the world. Locally, our governments debate laws designed to tear away the Judeo-Christian foundation of our society. More than ever before people seem determined to ignore the existence of our Creator. In the face of this, as Christians, it is all too easy to become discouraged and disheartened. However, as these days become darker, we must resist the temptation to despair. Thousands of years ago, the prophet Isaiah wrote these words:
“Hear me, you who know what is right, you people who have my law in your hearts. Do not fear the reproach of men or be terrified by their insults. For the moth will eat them up like garments; the worm will devour them like wool. But my righteousness will last forever, my salvation through all generations.” (Isa 51:7-8)
Do you realize that these words are eternal; that they will outlast the heavens and the earth? God’s promises are more certain than the ground we walk on. They can be relied on one hundred percent in every circumstance. And they are given to us to use for times such as these. Our God is never honoured when we allow ourselves to doubt, question and despair. Rather he expects us to honour him by choosing instead to exercise faith by standing on his word and claiming his promises. Instead of seeing these times as being ominous and threatening, we must see them as opportunities to shine God’s light through the exercise of our faith.
